Oh Sugar Sugar

We all love sugar and we all know it isn't good for us. But hold off on dismissing this delicious substance because while it isn't great for our insides, it's actually amazing for using on our skin.

Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin. So what's a humectant? A humectant is a substance that actually bonds with water molecules to increase the water content in the skin itself. Glycerin is one of the more typical and effective water binding agents but little old naughty sugar is another natural humectant meaning by applying it's delicious little granules to your skin you are not only shedding dead skin cells but also hydrating your skin as well.

Another amazing thing about sugar is that it's a natural source of glycolic acid - an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that penetrates the outer skin layer, breaks the bonds holding onto old skin cells allowing exfoliation and the generation of new, younger skin cells. This effective exfoliating miracle ingredient is great for sun damaged skin, anti ageing or for skin that is looking a little dull and needs a bit of a pick me up. The level of glycolic acid in sugar is low enough to be non-irritating on the skin but it is recommended that you only scrub with sugar two to three times a week.

Lastly, sugar has small particles - meaning it is much gentler on skin compared to larger granulated exfoliants which can cause microscopic tears. This gentle, skin loving ingredient is perfect for shedding those outer layers revealing beautiful, younger looking skin. 

We use a fair trade, organic, cane sugar in our Rose + Grapefruit Facial Scrub alongside crushed organic rose petals to soothe inflamed skin and help reduce redness on the skin. Take a small scoop in your hand and gently rub it in a circular motion on your face and neck, the best thing is that if a little falls in your mouth it tastes delicious!
